Oil Cams Manually To Avoid Damage

OK, i got my "new" 81 750 to pop and run on starting fluid so now before i put gas in the carbs i was thinking about manually oiling the cams because it's been sitting for a decade. can i just pop off the valve cover?

You haven't had it off to check valve clearances yet? By all means, please do so! While mine was off, I smeared assembly lube all over. "Back in the day", we used STP.

i'm not worried about valve clearances because it only has 4007 miles on it. yeah, i remember STP. it was thick like honey.
