Head stud direction

Ok, just a quick question, which way up to the head studs fit. Long thread up or down???
It must be the only photo I didn't take!!

Look at both ends very carefully. One end may have whitish looking reminders of gasket compound or silicone on it and it also at the INBOARD end of the threads has a raised ring that the other end does not have, the threads just end on the latter. The raised ring/gasket compound remainder goes down, the raised ring serves as a positive stop to make sure all studs go in the crankcase holes the exact same amount.
