Gas tan 550 vs 750

Can any one give me the specifics on what the difference is between the CB750 and Cb550 gas tanks for 69 - 74 years.

I am asking as some one tried to sell me a 550 tank and stating it would fit the 750 models with very little modifications?

i passed on it last night (the seller stated you can take a hammer an adjust it to fit). still looking for a clean early K tank .. lot of junk out there for sale

but to me the look similar in photos except for the gas cap location 750 centered and 550 to the side

You did good. Hammers adjust anything. Looks mean nothing, it's about the bung locations and how tank fastens at the back, as well as how well it fits your seat front. If petcock located in too far then major issues. How deep the inside middle frame rail runs in each matters too.

May well work but the stuff that thousands of failed project bikes are DNA over, it only needs a 'little modification'. The most misused words in bikedom.
