In the state/province/prefecture/etc. that you live in, is your motorcycle's engine number written on your title? It's not on mine. My odometer reading is even marked "E" for exempt. Apparently, my bike is too old for them to care. Stupidly, my title lists my bike as "Brown" which it has never been (even our dust is gray). Conversely, my car's odo. reading (from the time of purchase) is written on the title. Here in Washington State, an old Japanese bike's FRAME is the motorcycle. I don't know about HD, etc. My engine is basically just another part, like a muffler or a handlegrip... sheesh.

What about where you live? (General region)

I just picked up an 81 CB750c Saturday and hit the title office today to get the title transferred. All they wanted was proper signatures on the title and a value on the bike to set the sale taxes. 60 bucks later I walked out, easy peasy!

I believe Honda was one of the only manufacturer that did not have matching frame and motor numbers on the 750s, when they left the factory. Title numbers were taken off the frame.

In Missouri it's a mixed bag for anything pre '81. My '51 Chevy 3100 is titled on the original block number even though that engine is long gone because there isn't a frame number, and my '74 CB uses the frame number with no mention of the engine number.

With anything newer than '81 or so VINs are standardized. Typically here a modern used vehicle will have the current ODO reading at the time of transfer listed on the title. The exception is if it's older than 25 years or it's a basket case and you request exemption. I always register my antiques that way knowing I'll probably rebuild or swap just about everything so total mileage is irrelevant.
Requesting exemption is as simple as asking for it, as was the case when recently registering a 2001 BMW 650 GS I picked up in November. Technically a 2001 isn't up for historic tags until 2026 but I told the DMV that it was a project and not currently running but it did respond to a charger and show it's stored mileage. They were fine w marking it as exempt.
