long wait before starter engages

I just bought a 76 super sport which has plenty of issues to tackle. I am admittedly not an experienced bike technician, or anything close to it for that matter, so i am hoping that someone has seen this issue before. when i press the starter button, the lights flicker, but no action from the starter. if i hold the button for 10-20 seconds, the starter engages and the bike starts. any ideas?

likely the start button is bad, very common.
