After 40 years, I finally purchased some Japanese Industrial Standard Phillips style screw drivers and can't believe that I waited so long. I also purchased some impact JIS Phillips head drivers, which seem able to get anything out with a few careful wacks. This post is an encouragement to get the right tools. JIS screw drivers make a difference.
While the Phillips head screws on early Japanese bikes look like regular Phillips heads, they are Japanese Industrial Standard head which have different angles. Most of us use regular Phillips screw drivers on these bikes. That is just one reason why so many Phillips screw heads on Japanese bikes are busted open and damaged.
