Cuts out when put into gear

Well, I got one for everyone. When pulling in the clutch lever the starter will not engage (starts fine in neutral). I replaced the starter solenoid recently because it was bad with a cheap $15 one since I could not find OEM anywhere. So anyone have advice before I tear into it seriously? There's good advice out here and getting lazy in restoring. 1981 CB750K. TIA appreciate it.

Motorcycles should only start in neutral. If starts in neutral and pull in clutch and when shifting into 1st. Clutch is not fully engaged. Adjust screw at bottom by clutch cover

Thanks but that's not it. Clutch is clutching fine. For example your a stop and you kill it, pull in clutch hit start button while in gear. I guess I'll break out the ohm meter and schematics. Thanks for the reply.

I take it the bike doesn't lurch forward when it dies after putting it into gear? it just stops running?
I have to ask, is your kickstand down when putting it into gear? If the kickstand isn't an issue, you may have an m-unit specific wiring issue.

The bike does not move forward when clutch lever is pulled but attempting to start with the key on and the clutch pulled the selenoid or starter will not engage. As stated I changed out the starter selenoid with a newer $15.00 one. The bike starts fine when in neutral with cheap selenoid just not with key-on, pulling in the clutch and hitting starter button as it should. No schematics with the cheap selenoid so I don't know how it's wired. If memory serves me that a couple of wires need to be re-oriented in the connector, but damed if I can find it now. TIA

PS There is no Kickstand Safety Switch. 1981 CB750K. If there is I'll go play on the street with heavy traffic. Wait I'm riding a bike so doing that anyways.

I'm with Brett, I'd check the clutch switch, even if it is new. May not be installed just right, might be a wonky connection, or might be a bad switch right out of the box. Stranger things have happened. Not sure when they went to a kickstand switch, my '79 doesn't have one.

Ohm-d out the clutch handlebar switch, and it is fine. When troubleshooting, i usually go back to "What was the last thing you did?" as a start, which was to change out the starter relay, which was bad. I bought the cheap one that everyone is selling now, it appears. The OEM relay was $129.00 compared to $15.00. Somewhere in my brain archives, I seem to remember that the newer relays need to have a couple of wires reoriented, but I can't find that info now. Sure i can figure it out,, but I thought I would throw out the question here. thanks for all the replies

Yes, the Ohm-d out switch works properly. switch closed when the clutch engaged, open when released.
