Do these need servicing or only replacing , never seen these older type , only use to the ones that have fins and solid housing

As far as I know replacement only, you can update to a newer model if needed.

The solid state update (w the fins) replaces the regulator and the rectifier. I swapped mine out when I replaced the main harness. It all worked fine but why bother w outdated electrical bits when modern electronics are more stable/reliable and cheap. Also stepped up to an AGM battery.

The official name for that is the starter motor safety unit. It sits below the rectifier. Mine's as crusty as that one. K5 with 96k on it but it's still good.

No it's not. The starter motor safety unit is the black box that says 'Japan' on it in his pic and is half cropped out. The whole thing looks like this...

I stand Ashamed and corrected. You are absolutely correct. I misread the picture in the manual. Old people mistake.

Hahaha. I only knew because I just recently rewired my bike and replaced the starter safety unit w/a jumper.
