Will vinegar hurt aluminum heads if you soak them to get get rust out of places

it isn't rust it's oxidation and yes iit will hurt it don't do it and don't use caustic soda on ally

What's the best thing to use then to clean them with

brain in gear now if you mix white vinegar one to one with warm water it might give you some sort of result depending on how bad the head is. other than that lots of elbow power and assorted cleaning brushes, but not caustic soda. you could try baking soda , the thing is jap ally is a lot different to old brit bike ally, a welder once tried to repair a 500T crank case and it kept burning up, i think they have magnesium mixed in with it
