Aside from running out of gas without a warning, is there any negative with always running on the reserve?

I am just beginning my motorcycle driving and it seems odd that you would just run out if gas while driving if the petcock is switched to the ON position. It seems my gas gauge, unless something is wrong with it, measures the amount of fuel left only when the reserve fuel is needed. Meaning, I filled the tank up halfway and it shows full, the only time the fuel gauge started to go down is when the gas was low and only the reserve would operate the bike.

I just had the gas float out if the tank to clean it and all seemed ok.

Thanks

That makes sense. Though, today it seems to be working correctly. It has not worked in years, maybe it just needed to work out some kinks.

I would also check all your electrical connections, the fuel sensor runs on resistance and any corroded connections could be adding to the circuit and throwing it off.
