    Valve v valve seat

AMC forgive me for I have sinned. I am into the second rebuild of my ‘82, in my first rebuild I swapped out used exhaust valves for other used exhaust valves from a spare engine. I lapped them in etc, but I now see from some of your other threads that this was not my smartest move. I got a solid...

    Can’t reinstall exhaust camshaft

Hi First time engine rebuild- I am learning a lot 😝 Full disclosure; I thought I had completed the engine rebuild on my ‘81, until the fact I had zero compression led me to realize I mistimed both cams on installation. I do understand I may have damaged valves, we will see. ( If you can think of...

    Can't source shims.

I've been pussy footing around this job long enough! Engine is out of the frame, head comes off today; finally I can replace the exhaust valve seal that has always leaked.

    Can't source shims.

I need to replace shims (probably all of them) on my '82 DOHC. Does anybody know of a place I can order them from? Thanks😎

    Simple valve check defies manual

Thanks (again) amc Much to think about; I have a spare engine which seems to have much better valve clearances- I think I'll get braves and prep the spare head for a swap. I appreciate all your advice, now I have to get my hands dirty :) Oliver Boy

Yes, just did it again. All too tight.

    Simple valve check defies manual

I have a question .....there may not be a good answer .... How can all the valves end up so uniformly tight? I'm currently on the lookout for a set of feeler gauges that measures thinner than .038 mm- otherwise I cant even measure what thickness shims I need to set things straight . I'm...

High valve clearance on #1 exhaust cylinder - cause for low compression?

Strange you should mention that about the #2 exhaust clearance. As we already discussed, all my valve clearances would appear to be 'too tight as well (less than .034mm), except for that one cam which is at .06mm. I'm now really curious to see if my compression test matches yours....

    Simple valve check defies manual

Thanks Jimbonaut. I guess a new set of feeler gauges is first on my list. I'll do a compression check on all the cylinders too; if they are all OK I may leave well alone.... I'm concerned that if my manual is inaccurate regarding the cam lobe orientation, the clearance figures may be unreliable...

    Simple valve check defies manual

All I want to do is check my valve clearances, should be simple- right? Bike was running fine most of last season, but poor starting made me decide to take a look at the valves before timing and carbs... Issue one; when the end of my camshaft is at the position stipulated in my Clymer manual...

    Vacuum Guages

Thanks Dave, the compressed air sounds a way better idea than string. Is there any hack you know of, to fabricate a tool for removing the keepers with the head on? amc advocates removing the head -which is undoubtedly the most professional approach-but removing the engine is a whole new world of...

    Vacuum Guages

Thanks amc49 :) This job is getting bigger rather than smaller but I am learning a ton and I appreciate your time. Carbstix eh? Right. I'm on it... I have a few hours off today; valves first I am thinking. I used the bike quite a lot this summer, apart from the reluctant starting it runs like a...

    Vacuum Guages

Thanks for the quick reply, my post was a bit ambiguous :) What I meant to say was that I intend to access and adjust the idle mixture screws, I read that I would do that by drilling the covering off - just as you suggest- I'm certainly not about to attack my delicate little places with a drill...

    Vacuum Guages

Hi guys. I'm starting a carb improvement project; my '81 has never started very well and I'm tired of hanging onto the throttle for 10 minutes every time I start it up. The bike is now going have to be a daily commmuter -rain and shine- it's got to be more user friendly. After checking valve...

Starting it up, keeping it running

Thanks, this is extremely helpful! My '81 is going to have to serve as a winter commuter this year- I need to get it starting with much less fuss then it requires at the moment and Vancouver rain is not going to help the situation :) You mentioned a second bike- What are you building? (I have...

Starting it up, keeping it running

Hi rs ss350 I know this is an older thread, but I am having exactly the same issue with my '81. Did you try the carb mod - if so did it work out? Thanks :)

    Gas leaking

When I had this problem it was because a valve in one of the float chambers was sticking. Seems unlikely if you have rebuilt the carbs, unless you might have left some crud around a float valve assembly?

    Got the horn?

Thanks ralfalc I found the same make and model at Canadian Tire for cheap (although the 72102 is called the Freeway Blaster here). I mounted it in no time and it is much better than the old one :) Cant say I am bowled over by the aesthetics, but safety first eh? I'm loving the paint job on...

    Got the horn?

Suggestions please :) I need an upgrade to the standard horn I have on my '81 750K. Currently it sports a replacement from CB750Vintage.com; it was promptly delivered and looks great but is really weedy. Pathetic in fact. When I sit on the bike with my helmet on and the engine running, I can...

    New fork seal leaking.

100k ago I changed out the fork seals on my '81 750K. They were delivered (promptly) from vintage CB750 cycle parts; I have used these guys for several items and they seem good so far... Both seals are already leaking however. I might just order another pair and try a different installation...

Do I need a new oil pump?

Someone else might find this useful! My oil pressure warning light was on because I had pinched the wire to the idiot light (when I re installed the starter motor) creating a short circuit. Even when the wire was removed from the pressure switch plug, the warning light stayed on. Having...

Do I need a new oil pump?

Thanks Grepper I really enjoyed the story of your SOHC rebuild; I see you drilled a hole in the castings to mount your switch (eek). There is a tempting looking threaded section where the current pressure sensor is housed- trouble is it does not have the clearance to rotate a pressure gauge in...

Do I need a new oil pump?

I have a 1981 750K. I brought it in 2012 -running perfectly This poor maligned beast then sat in a leaky freezy garage for two years while I have been doing house renovations. (Yeah, I know, I hate myself too). Bringing the machine back to life this summer, I have worked through the more...
