    1981 CB750 carburetor removal

Could be that the rubber boots have lost their elasticity over the years, mine were the same when I tried to remove the carbs. I pointed my shop heater directly at the boots for an hour or so (a hair dryer will do the job too) until the boots are nice and warm. This should make them more...

You painted those rims with what? They look really great - what exactly is that paint you used? Great job!

Are the rubber tank mounts installed on either side of the front of the frame? If not your tank might be sitting too far forward and this could result in the bars hitting the tank Hope things are going well mate - riding season is here and man I'm jonesing to get my CB on the road... Could...

How you getting on with the cylinders? The deepest I've gotten in to the engine is the valve head to check the valve clearances, but would like to change the piston rings as well. Looking at Clymers I think I can do it, have to remove the overhead cams, timing chains etc. Little daunting!

Did you have a crack at those carbs yet? I finally got the engine out of the frame yesterday and onto the workbench - now that it's out I'm going to look at the pistons and rings and probably change all of them. I have low compression on cylinder #1 and it might be down to the rings.

It's an intricate job but I really enjoyed it. I had Mike's booklet, and the rebuild kit from Randakk.com which has gaskets, o rings and other assorted gubbins that are considered amongst the best you can get. Followed the booklet to a t - I dismantled the rack as well which made getting to...

Ah, there's a man who knows what he's talking about! What do you think might be giving him his low compression? Rings?

I'd get the carbs on the bike for sure. Otherwise you've got a big hole on each of the cylinders where the carbs should be - that'll surely affect the compression. Try the test again, with the carbs connected to the cylinders, clamped on nice and tight. Soften up the rubbers first by warming...

Otherwise (and I'm no expert) it could be u need new piston rings, or you could try blasting some sea foam into each carb's air intake with the engine running. You'll see a drop in rpm but throttle past that (around 5000rpm) - the sea foam might knock off carbon deposits in the cylinders and...

When u were cranking the engine for the compression test, did u have the throttle wide open? Doing so could give u a better reading

Read it, and bought his booklet =) I've emailed him loads too and he's always really quick to help. Great guy. Good to hear your bearings are in great shape - getting those things out sucked.
