I've found that preloading the shifter results in fewer missed shifts. Also, you don't have to squeeze the clutch lever to the bar. It only takes about half its travel to disengage, and that makes the shift quicker and smoother, but YMMV.

Got a muffler repack kit and stuffed it into the V and H pipe. Somewhat better, but still plenty loud.
