I have been told by a mechanic here where I live that with all the problems with the early engines (tranny problems etc ) it would be better to try and find a later engine perhaps from 76-78. What are thoughts on this topic? I will be pulling the entire engine apart so It will almost be a new bulid. Is this something to be concerned about or just carry on?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

There are no issues with the early engines. You mechanic doesn't have a clue. Carry on....I prefer the earlier motors. The later the engine the less power you will make.

Not trying to sound like a jerk or anything. There just are no common issues with the motors, trannys etc. Weak links occur when you really start to push the horse power but then every engine has its weakness when you start chasing the HP.
