Trying to figure out what gas tanks will fit on a 1982 750 Nighthawk.

This is my bike frame

These are craigslist advertised as mid 70's (72-76) CB 750 tanks that I would like to try....anyone know if they will fit nicely or require heavy modifications?

Looks like you want a sohc tank which I'm with ya they look better IMO they don't have the turn down section by the seat. I ended up cutting mine off it's just more work and welding.

SOHC no turn down

DOHC you can see the turn down by the carbs

Or with a little work modify your existing tank.

current tank....it's not that I completely dislike this tank...but I would prefer a narrower tank. I know I may lose some riding time between fill ups, but I can live with that....so the above three Orange, red and black tanks work on this frame or no?

NONE of them simply throw on to work with no mods and even including the later DOHC on DOHC. Several may be close but close means work. Tanks will work (they go over the frames) but some you'll need to make up a different way to fasten down the rear as DOHC tanks were longer. Then the design elements merging with the side covers cause more issue.

Depends on WHERE you want narrow, the Nighthawk tank is the narrowest of all right at the very back of it, even over the SOHC tanks. Why all the volume got pushed to the front and high, look at your very own pic there. It's a cruiser bike tank for short guys with narrow inseams.

How about the Super Sport F tanks? Do they require the same effort to adapt as the K tanks? Primarily rear mounting and seat fitment? Or are they too horizontal and require frame modification?

There f tanks are the same as the k's

It's to early to tell what i do unfortunately. I might modify this tank...i had a crazy idea of chopping this tank and narrowing it....still to early

Ugh... live and learn I guess. I'm dealing with one that appears to have had brake fluid sitting on it and has rusted pretty badly.

Can you strip and restore it? As long as the inside is useable, then it might be worth the trouble.

That's what I'm hoping... gonna strip it down this evening and see what it looks like. There are all sorts of rust bubbles on both sides of the tank which makes me think its completely rusted through. See below.

The inside of the tank is a whole other story... the liner is coming up and it looks pretty rusty and gunky in there. I'll take a picture later and share.

Hoping that when I strip it later I'll find that its not rusted through and can get the inside of the tank all cleared out... then electrolysis to remove the rust.
