Update:
So, I applied power to the brushes (black and white wires) via a direct connection to the battery. When I start the bike it produces 20-30 volts AC at 3k rpms from any 2 of the 3 yellow leads. That leads me to believe that the stator is good and the rotor and R/R are bad. Would you...
I went back and started from the beginning. The spec for the Ohms on the slip ring is 3.6-4.4 ohms. Mine reads 2.7. So, I'm guessing that the resistance is too low causing the rotor to short out and prevent it from creating a magnetic field which in turn would send AC voltage out from the...
Hello all,
So, I've been working on this for the past few day and I'm stumped. I disconnected the stator wires from where they go into the R/R. With the 3 yellow wires I got 0 voltage with the engine running. Also I could not detect any magnetism from the rotor with the engine running. Would...
Are your carbs apart? If so, put the screw into the bowl, fill the bowl with water. I have a couple of old screws in good condition. Let me know if you want one.

I fired her up yesterday! Now I need to fix the air box and install it,...... new tires, brake lines, rear shocks........

Remember though, Search Tempest is for Craigslist. A lot of folks won't deal with you when you talk about shipping. You can expand your search area on Ebay though. Since there are some forms of buyer protection there, that's probably the way to go.
Good luck,
Al
Perhaps you should expand your search area. If you could get a running bike for around $500.00- $700.00 and pay $400.00 to ship you'd still be ~$1000.00 ahead. Unless you need to see the bike in person. Try https://www.searchtempest.com/
Good luck,
Al
If I'm reading your post right...............
Are you going to bypass the air cut-off on each carb? I just did this to my carbs last night! PM me your address and I'll mail the remainder of the O ring that I used.
Al
I thought it was the other way around; You bypass them to avoid having to change them ($$) when they do go bad. My carbs are apart and I'm bypassing them.
Four to six thousands is perfect. I know the manual states .002 but that causes burnt valves. You're shooting for .005

Oh, and DO NOT rotate the engine without all of the shims in place...
Where is a good place to get jets? I plan to go back to stock, 68 and 98. I was ready to order from jetrus but that 8 bucks for shipping pissed me off. I've tried several searches with no luck.
While my carbs were soaking I decided to trouble shoot the no spark on 1-4. I traced to back to a bad CDI unit. Is there a good (cheap) place to buy these? The best deal I've found yet is http://www.regulatorrectifier.com/catalog/1979-1983-honda-cb750-cb-750-cdi-unit I guess I might as well...
Thanks for the info AMC. I checked for spark today. No spark on 1 and 4. Spark on 3. So it looks like the left coil is shot. I'm going to pursue this later. Right now I have the carb apart and they are a hot mess.
You're right about the dead fish part. The screw on the bowls were in horrible...
It could mean that. If you don't get continuity between two ends of the wire, then check both ends of that wire to ground. If you do get continuity to ground, that is your short to ground. Trouble shooting can be very tedious. That's why you need to be very methodical, take your time, document...
