I have three now. Just finished the 350 on Saturday, drove it to the hardware store on Monday, and got a cash offer. Not enough of a cash offer but an offer none-the-less.
I have seen others comment on cracked emulsifier tubes in the carbs. Usually very small and hard to see if you aren't looking for them. I don't know if that is the problem but it appears that too much gas is getting in.
I have seen several that develop a leak around the head gasket. There are 4 rubber donuts between the head and the cylinders that seal the oil passages. I am betting that they get dried out or cracked. On mine I have no oil underneath, but it does leak onto the cylinder fins and eventually my...
If the wheels don't roll it is probably the frozen brakes. If the engine is froze cutting the chain is a good idea 'cuz you will want to replace it anyway.
If not the cap, what do the plugs look like. I also had a coil ground come loose. Finally figure it out when I got a shock off the tank right before it started dying.
Polishing - depending on how grungy the pieces are, I started with a wire brush on a drill, then hand sanding with 400/500 grit. I finished with two polishing wheels on a drill (one for white rouge and the other for red rouge). I have heard of some people finishing with the Mother's ball and...
Very doubtful this Yamaha is a shaft drive so the rear would have no way to mount up the rear sprocket. I think some of the pre-1980 XS series may have had chain drive and cast wheels. You might want to investigate them.
Vicman is right. Those are the stock wheels. The polished rims have been painted black with a gold pin stripe. I think the same wheels are used on the XS750 and XS1100 as well.
Thanks Vicman. OMG, the Purple Rain flashback, I see it now. Too funny. I am already finding that a XS850 Standard (not Special) gas tank is hard to find but we will get there. Take care.
I figured the support thing was going to be a challenge when I bought it. That's why I wanted one that was running. Mods will be mostly cosmetic and looking forward to honing some fabrication skills. Picture attached is kinda what I am going for. An 80's-style racer.
Couldn't pass this one up. Barn find that sat for 5 years. A 19 year old mechanic apprentice got it running and fixed all the electrics. I gave him $700 for it. Needs a lot of spit and polish but only has 13,000 miles and the tank is clean. I was afraid to cut up my Super Sport but this one...
Agree with Stabler. Sounds like a main fuse. Had one with the same issue. Fuse would get hot because it was too long for the terminals and the terminals were a little corroded. The fuse link did not blow but it actually melt the solder at the ends. A little clean up of the terminals and a...
I did have a few break off when I did this. I carefully drilled a hole near the broken tang and put in a pop rivet. I think it is a stronger attachment than the tang.
I agree with what dirtdigger says. These motors are pretty bulletproof and if it only has 13K miles it's probably in good shape. Other than the carbs, focus on the valve and timing chain adjustments. Most people didn't do either and adding pretty new performance parts on a valve train full...
I know that hose. It is not going anywhere because it used to go to the airbox. Since you are running pods there is no place for it to land. Might want to consider a small filter for it since it is feeding the canister.
A real detailed cleaning and removing all the tackle on the rear of the bike would probably increase its sale price a hundred bucks or more. If you get a battery and get it running even better. If those exhaust pipes aren't rotted through they would be worth some bucks as they are hard to...
Dobber, nice looking bike. I am curious about the rear suspension. Looks like a stock swing arm but you obviously have a monoshock stuffed back in there somewhere.
I used DEI wrap on the crossover on my supercharged Pontiac and it worked great. The crossover was near the supercharger and the wrap lowered the intake air temp. a bit. If I remember it was a kit that came with a high temp clear coat that I sprayed on the wrap. Never had any issues.
I have a small oil leak at the head gasket so I am planning on replacing it this winter. I don't want to pull the engine out. Will I have enough clearance to pull the head without having to cut the top tubes?
