Pods suck

Ok, first post. Go easy on me…So, I’m aware that the general consensus is airbox is best. I have one k5 running the airbox in standard trim. However I’ve been stubbornly trying to get my k7 soon to be cafe racer to work with pods. After much road testing and tinkering I’ve got the bike running like a stabbed rat. HOWEVER anything slightly more than a gentle roll on the throttle from idle in neutral is often followed by the sound of the pods sucking in lots of air and the bike cutting out. If I roll on the throttle to get the revs up a bit I can then snap the throttle consistently with perfect results but that initial first snap ( presumably when the vacuum is low?) has a tendency to cut the engine. Anyone got any ideas how this can be tamed. I’ve gone from 40’s on the pilots to 45’s to try and get more fuel through but still the same results. Carbs have been thoroughly cleaned and synced etc. is it possible that the timing (though I know it’s very close) could be off just enough to effect this? Any input appreciated.

45 idle jet, 120 main, clip fourth from top on needle. Air screw just over a turn out but have tried either way and can’t seem to eradicate it. Since going up to 45 there’s been less deceleration popping and runs great everywhere else.

Maybe try polishing your piston valves (that hold the needles) to make sure they are sliding well at the bottom. Also, did you put the black ring in the correct way?

Thanks. That all moves freely and snaps up and down nicely. New cable. Seals in the right way.

K7 should have key hole carbs but thats beside the point I guess. I have never had issues getting round tops to work with pods. when running...get to where it bogs and start closing the choke, if it picks up and runs better it is lean in that area, if it gets worse it is rich. The round tops have adjustable needle jets to which you normally have to change positions when going to pods.

Had that problem on one of my bikes and I ended up restricting the air flow by adding a filter type material in the pod and it fixed the problem. Not sure if it will work for you but might and any suggestions are better than none.

Thanks. Yes, I had k7 carbs on previously but preferred the simplicity of the round top carbs. I shall persevere with tuning but I know I’m close to where it needs to be. Are you able to snap the throttle from idle with no issues? I may need to try going down to the last notch on the needle. See if that eases the symptoms.

snapping the throttle just sitting still not under a load means nothing and has no purpose, under a load is all that matters really. without an accelerator pump will make it hard to get all the hesitation out of it just snapping the throttle. As I said above use the choke to get your jetting close, dont just instantly go to the last notch on the needle, that is a huge jump if its in the middle.
