Found it right where I left it.

I'm having trouble locating the index mark on a 1980 Custom. This is the mark I'm supposed to line the 1,4T mark up to in order to line the #1 and #4 cylinders to TDC. Any help is appreciated as my engine is not quite the same as the one in my manual.

Welcome. Looks like you've got a bit of a project ahead of you.

Progress. That is one cruddy switch. If it were me I'd replace it but if I were honest I'd admit that I'd probably try to clean it first. My guess is that you can get it to work if you can clean it and get it back together fairly easily without breaking anything.

Just a quick update: the project is coming along slowly but it's still coming along. I've begun reassembling, stopping periodically to replace parts that are worn or bolts that ran away when the boxes of parts were moved. I'm taking my time but making progress. Should be running in a few weeks.

joltman, after rereading your original post it sounds like a slightly bigger issue than I originally was thinking. when I said to check the physical condition I meant to check for wires that had gotten pinched or otherwise damaged. the wires that go under the tank and other hard to reach places...

Dirtdigger, you were right on the money about the chain guide. The one that sits in the front just came out in 3 pieces. this seems like a potentially hard to find part. The guide under the top chain (between the cam gears) seems to be pretty worn as well. any suggestions on where I might score...
