    check the field coil wires. i had an issue where one of the field coil connections had come loose. resoldering it fixed it right up. before that I was getting an intermittent charging issue (the headlight wouldn't brighten with revving the engine).

    I would get the valves adjustments back into clearance. It can be done without too much fuss provided you have all the shims you need. Until this is corrected, adjusting the carbs will be tantamount to chasing your tail.
