What am I doing wrong?

1980 CB750F Rear Brake Caliper installment

I position the shoes into their designated slotted spaces upon the caliper bracket. I go to slide the caliper on to the bracket but there's not enough clearance between the fully compressed piston and the other end of the caliper assembly.
