Does this connecting rod look twisted?! This motor has been full of surprises what with an extra valve adjuster but and bolt just floating around inside causing a valve to bend and break and punching a large hole in the piston! Now we are putting it back together the notice the connecting rod looks twisted?

And we cannot get the ild gasket material off in large areas. Have used brake cleaner and rust blaster hoping to swell it up and scrape it off to no avail - suggestions?

Total strip down required.
I think I'd tend to regard anything from that engine as suspect.
Then again, I suppose that you could always force the rod straight as it is, then sell the bottom end to some unsuspecting fool.
Not that I condone that sort of behaviour, but I reckon people in the trade have probably done worse in the past.

Pity you didn't notice before you got to this stage, as long as the crank is OK find a straight rod and carry on with the build, did you manage to get the barrels back to a usable condition? What about the head?
Careful use of a wood chisel will usually get old gaskets off, the sharper the better and keep the angle shallow.

Crank and other rods looks good.

Just have to undo the bottom main bolts holding the engine halves together and separate (no gasket sealant used) and lift crank out again to undo the one connecting rod and then reassemble…
