well what a loon i have just done about 3000km on my 750 FZ [ jap import clocks in km] and decided to do an oil change. when i had things in my hand i wondered why the oil filter wasn't springing and the reason being i hadn't put the the spring and washer into the housing when i got it road worthy. i realise now oil could by pass the filter and this COULD create problems. i strained the oil and looked in the filter and found a couple of tiny bits in the filter and the same in the oil, phew nothing serious. i found the spring in the workshop but no washer but i have plenty that would be a good replacement . i checked the new filter in the housing without the spring and washer and could just see daylight poking through where the rubber seal is so the filter was just about doing it's job. all back together now with spring and washer no damage done, i got away with that one.
