Shifter sticking

I just replaced my stator cover gasket. Used ultra black. Once i torque down the cover the shift lever sticks. With the bolts hand tight it moves perfectly fine, but tighten it up just a bit and it hangs up.
 
Which year? Are you talking about the rear part of the cover that goes around the shift shaft? If so, it sounds like something got out of place with the shift linkages or shift shaft when you pulled the cover off. You'll have to remove the cover again to investigate. Take a picture behind the cover and post it.
 
I removed the cover already, checked linkage, everything is working right and looks good. Its only when the cover is torqued to spec that the shifter hangs up, when its hand tight its alll good. I did find that one of the locating dowels was a little rusted up so im replacing that. But also i used ultra black rtv for a gasket. I dont know how tight the tolerances are but maybe the stock gasket keeps it spaced properly and rtv allows it to close just a smidge tighter? Seems ulikely but I dont know for sure…
 
Oh 1980 and yes the three bolts nearest to the shift shaft are the ones that if I torque down it sticks. Ill take a pic later today.

if you put some engineers blue on the gear shift plate and bolt the case up then try the gears if the case is binding it up you will see where it is tight, if you haven't got the blue use a tiny smear of grease, if the gasket is thinner than the original that could be why.

Interestingly enough, it was the gasket. I guess the original gasket is obviously thicker than the rtv when torqued down. So with just rtv case is closing too tight and binding up the shift shaft. I didnt think that tolerance would be that tight. Lesson learned 👍
 
where possible use genuine parts there is way too much crap on the market for cars and bikes, some pattern parts making things dangerous, people make money out of the crap. i make most of my gaskets and always mic up the original before choosing the gasket paper, funnily enough gear change can even lock up on 70 year old brit bikes that were built to the nearest half inch :laugh: 😉 if the gearbox gaskets are not correct thickness , glad you sorted it i'm still learning in old age.
 
That picture is not of a 1980, that is a sohc motor 1978 or earlier. RTV is the worst thing you can use on the sohc motor, rtv has a tendency to soften up and break off on any that has squished out inside the the motor. When this happens it plugs up the oil orifice in the cylinder head and it burns up the camshaft and cam towers. Make sure you get every bit of it out of there. The only acceptable sealant to use if needed is something like Hondabond but you cant substitute using only a sealant in place of a gasket. Oem gaskets are thicker than the aftermarket gaskets and seal better but I have had good luck with the gaskets from cyclex. You said you also replaced the stator cover gasket? Just using the rtv? if so you need to take that back off as well and put a gasket in there. Do not use RTV on anything. You are also possibly making the starter gear too tight if you are not using a gasket on that cover.
