Just got hold of a Sebring Mu150 4-1 system in black glossy paint.

The silencer looks fine but the exhaust pipes needs a good polishing, but…
How how do you polish it the best way without ruining it?
Is it like a normal paint with cutter, rubbing, polish … or should I use somerhing else?

If it is paint, personally I would test an area that can't be readily seen by wet sanding with 3k grit paper. If it isn't doing anything, go to 2.5k, the 2k, etc. until you see the paper improving the shine. Be sure to ALWAYS keep it lubricated with water.
Was the paint rated for high temps?

It is the original finish on the Sebring. I think it was marketed with either chrome or this shiny black finish. I would guess it is about the same age as these cycles, so around 40 years old now.

Maybe it isn't paint but some surface treatment, some kind of alloying in the chrome or some other type of electrochemical plating that gives the black shine. The images doesn't do it justice, it looks cooler in reality.

Does anyone know how it is made?
