I have removed the carbs from my 82 750SC for rebuilding. The rubber boots that connect the carbs to the air box look in good shape and I plan to reuse them. But it looks like the were installed to the air box with some kind of adhesive which has degraded to the point where is wasn't doing much.

Is it necessary to seal these boots to the air box? Is there a specific kind of sealant to use?

NO sealant. If boots are correct for your model, no sealant is needed... If they are old and not pliable, put them on warm / somewhat hot water to make them pliable if needed to work them on...

It's not necessary, but if you feel like using it any black RTV silicone will do the job. It's just tricky to get it in there and then install and align the boots.

Warming the boots or doing the work when it's hot outside is a good idea.
