I acquired a 78K bike knowing the carbs needed to be rebuilt according to the seller. The engine starts eventually using full choke and running the starter for an extended period. The accelerator pump doesn't seem to be working and other issues such as starting from a dead stop I need to keep it at a high RPM, otherwise it'll die. I checked the points gap, timing and did a compression test, all good there.

Long story short I'm planning on rebuilding the carbs and cleaning them with an ultrasonic which I will need to purchase. I did some research on this forum and there was a mention that you could leave the carbs assembled as a unit providing the cleaner was long enough.

I have experience rebuilding carbs on older Goldwings and ST1100's as well as car engines carbs but the CB carbs are a first for me. I found the Doc Jones you tube videos for rebuilding the carbs and have a service manual as well.

My question has anyone cleaned the carbs all assembled and it worked out for them and what brand/model cleaners are long enough to accommodate the carb set.

All input welcome

I clean them still together if all they need is the internals cleaned and if the orings between the carbs dont leak. Many times the orings leak if they have been dry for years.

I removed the carbs today and partially disassembled them. It appears they've never been rebuilt since new in '78 so I'm going to break them all the way down and rebuild them completely.

Does anyone have any recommendations for ultrasonic cleaners?

I have a CREWORKS 10 litre one from Amazon £140.00 my Christmas present to myself, seems to work very well has had a fair bit of use and works very well.

I recommend genuine Honda carb packing kits and reuse the original brass. The accelerator pump crossover tubes have little brass restrictors inside so be sure to retrieve those when replacing the accelerator pump crossover tubes. The 78' also uses rubber tipped float needles and I suggest original Honda float needles as well. They are pricey, but I've used aftermarket float needles that had tips turn to goo after less than a week after exposure to ethanol laced fuel leaving me trying to do my best impression of "Ghost Rider" with a growing puddle of fuel beneath the bike sitting at a stop light...
