Working on a project bike, 82 cb750c, was testing for continuity, hooked up battery and my harness immediately started smoking, didn't get it disconnected fast enough, and the little wire (neutral switch?) coming off of my pulse generator caught completely on fire. I've since learned that that wire is built into the pulse generator and I need to replace the entire thing. Any thoughts on WHY it would have been the thing to catch fire? Would hate to replace it and just melt it again.

Sounds very strange,

Only thing I can think of, is if you have a bad main ground and all the current went thru the neutral switch yo ground (engine) instead.

What do you mean by "testing for continuity" ? Can you describe the procedure?

So testing for continuity uses the ohms setting on a multi-meter. You check both ends of a circuit to verify that it's not shorting by seeing the displayed resistance in ohms.

Understood, does the bike have a history of electrical problems?
I wish I knew the answer to that. The main fuse was missing when I received the bike. I did get another answer on reddit that is promising. Apparently the plug from the starter solenoid can be put in backwards, which sends a hard 12v to anything starting related, which would include the now-ash neutral switch wire.

A good place to start!
