I have a 1981 Honda 900F with comstar wheels and would like to powdercoat them. I have heard conflicting stories on how the heat (400 degrees F) will cause a molecular change in the Aluminum and could cause the wheel to break under higher speeds. Whatever higher speeds means.... Anyone out there know anything about this situation by chance????
Thanks

From what i can see from reliable metalurgical/engineering sites aluminium does "weaken" at 200c(bout 400f)...and melts at 600c...
Mild steel is affected at much higher temps about double...

FWIW...Dunno if id risk my bike on forum opinion😄 UNLESS referrenced..google engineering sites or talk to a metalurgist.....then decide on what you want to do....

(Keep in mind comstars are an alloy not pure Aluminium.....so that will b a factor)

From what i understand....wheels by DID Japan...
Possibly they woukd share historical data...
As an aside i beleive there are lower temp powder coats... but these are reportedly less durable...lasting less than 12 months by reports
