Paintwork and the engine were done , the build is done , now the riding starts

And the neutral switch light strikes again ! Ever since I replaced the switch , it has dripped a bit of oil , so had a look at the o-ring and it was knacked . Could well be the original as it has just turned brittle and is crumbling . So new one in and hopefully no drips . And I put on the dyna-s igniton with a new points cover . I have had the ignition for sometime and wanted to wait till I had put some miles on the bike to get my monies worth out of the points and condensors I had in it . Set up was very easy , just a few new connectors , the supplied stuff is crap . My old points cover looks to have kissed the bitumen at some time , I have removed most of the damage , but it has some large gouges in it , so new one it is . A new original is 500 aussie dollaroos down under so I went for the much cheaper SOHC ( one fifth the price )

Been fighting a dead bog off idle , seemed to get better the more mixture screw I gave it , ended up with 3.5 turns out but never really was good . Once out of the pilot circuit/needle jet it was fine , but everytime you hit the throttle it just died . So bit the bullet and got some 40 pilot jets and fitted them today . As usual it is absolutely flogging down with rain and we are even expecting a possible cyclone . Wont be riding anytime soon . Was told on another forum to check the breathers on the carbs , didnt even realise it had them , doh ! 2 were blocked , so I got them cleaned out and gave the whole rack a good bast with air and carb cleaner

Going to call 40 pilot jets for the win ! Fired right up as per usual and instantly was able to rev . So the $64 000 question is " Was it the blocked breathers or too small a pilot ? " Time will tell , but way too wet to ride , so now we wait . One thing I did notice when reassembling the bike , yet again , was this dingus is meant to fit into the front , top of the airbox . F and K`s with the peediddies have a notch in top of the airbox to fit . Mine dont fit too well and actually touches , So it might be time to crack out the heat gun for a bit of plastic melt . Or are there two different types of airbox boot/bellmouth and I have the roundtop one ?

amazing restoration, looks great! I'm actually working on the same bike/color now, but going the custom rout.

The boot between the air box and carb is different F1 to F2 not a huge difference but when you put them side by side it’s obvious.
Checked them and they are 405`s , so mine might be warped from heat and old age . Will investigate further when I pull the carbs again , hopefully that will be in a while . Not even going to try and ride at the moment as I cannot walk through my yard without sinking . My shed is towards the back of my house and its nothing but clay between it and the front fence . The bike would just cut up my yard , so we wait

We’ve been having biblical amounts of wind and rain as well as snow and ice so not biking weather here either!

Loki
I made a post somewhere commenting about what mild winter weather we usually get in the UK, and how people use motorcycles all year round.
Since then it's rained almost constantly, my garden has turned into a swamp, roads are flooded, rivers are overflowing.
Just hoping the summer will be better.

We seem to be getting wetter and wetter summers down unda . Hot and wet and humid , Had 30-50 mm last night , it woke me up at 2.20 am it was so loud

Man - you have put some effort in. It is reflected(literally) in the photos. Well done. Remember you have to ride this thing - any get it dirty! Haha
Look forward to a real broom broom video.
Cheers

Ta mate , how did you go with that motor? Hope you didnt get ripped off as you posted about that scammer . There are people on the aussie bookface site that could help https://www.facebook.com/groups/cb750AU/ I will get to ride it one day , just waiting till its dry out . Took a while after I got it together to fix the final things , like overflowing/blocked/clogged carbs and correct jetting for my setup . neutral light switch which still does not work , I fitted a new o-ring and now it wont make contact to work . Then as per usual our wet season kicked in with a vengence . So I`m in no rush . My yard in the pic is very soft wet clay under the green stuff , which I have difficulty walking over at the moment . I sink up to my ankles , so the bike will just get bogged and it is too shiny for that , maybe when she`s older and more used and abused

FINALLY ! Got to ride the bike today , the sun is out , but man did it flog down yesterday . Checked it over for loose bolts and gave the chain a quick lube then pumped up the tyres before I went for a ride around the block . That felt so good that I was confident enough to go a lot further and got onto some major roads for higher speeds . Straight up the front end is crooked , so that was fun riding , am going to have to loosen her off and re-align it . Got it revving out to 7 grand in 3rd at one point , man it pulls and feels good . No bogging at all and smooth as silk with that beautifull 4 into 1 howl , so looks like I got the jetting in the ball park . It has a nice lumpy idle which sounds like a big cam , but alas it is only std , had a few people looking at traffic lights though . When I got home aboot half an hour later , I noticed the brake light was stuck on . Luckily it was just the rears spring attatchment to the peddle , it had come off and caught on the footpeg mount , so easy fix . The front end felt good but the rear was a bit harsh , might have the shocks wound up , if not , I see some ikon`s in the future . The front left tank badge was loose also , luckily I have some spair clips . Very pleased to get that monkey off my back , so now retweek it and get some miles on her

I read recently that setting the idle speed too low is a major cause of cam bearing wear on these engines.
I've no idea if that is true, ( and someone will probably come along now and say that it's bullshit), but just in case I'll be setting my idle speed on the fast side from now on.

As a 30-year Harley guy I understand the tendency to leave the idle low, but my '79 seems to like around 1100rpm. I can actually adjust it down to 1000, which is what I believe the book calls for but after a few miles it just shifts back to 1100 by itself.

Grewth , I`m idleing at 1100-1200 , it seems to be happy there , but even up to 1300-1400 you cant really tell it`s fast/high . The delkevic 4 into 1 without the DB killer insert is just a deep rumble and sounds mean at idle and has quite a howl at higher rpm

1000 +/- 100 is spec 1300-1400 you should be starting to get into the ignition advance and is where many people start having hanging or irratic idle issues because the advancer starts moving and changing time which affects idle speed.

Low idle can cause wear, oil pressure drops off fairly fast the lower the idle speed. The cam is restricted with the oil orfice so gets very little oil at idle. The cam bearings are also somewhat inconsistent and loose clearance so pressure bleeds off fast at the cam.

Gave my front end the old between the knees tweek , hopefully that was enough to straighten it out , then replaced the clip on the tank badge , the old one died , so when I popped off the emblem it just fell out . Luckily I had bought new ones when doing the resto ,.I thought the painter would wreck the old ones , but he didnt , so I have spares . The brake spring just needed to be turned 180 on the brake switch and footpeg so it didnt catch the footpeg mount underneath . With the tank off I can clearly see why I have trouble refitting my aircleaner everytime it`s off . So one day I will either shave off some of the air cleaner or bevel the bottom of the carb stay

Took the bike on a much longer ride today , through traffic and on the highway . Cannot get over how smooth these bikes run , not quiet though as you can hear those chains going round and round with the tappets rattling . Speedo and tacho dont waiver at all , which is nice . She does 2500 in fourth at 60 kph and 4500 in fifth at 100 kph . Not sure about my true speed though as everyone was slowly going past me on the dual lane roads , at 80 kph and 100 kph . It seemed right , but who knows , will have to try a gps speedo and see . Passed 4 radars on the trip , so cannot see myself getting a ticket . Now the " 64 thousand dollar question " How do I change gears without crunching the box ? I have driven trucks with non syncro roadranger gearboxes clutchless that made less noise when going through the gears . First to second just goes smash/crunch/bang . I seem to have the hang of the others with a bit of pressure before the change and a quick hit of the clutch , got a false between third and fourth once though . So what do you guys do ? Just buy earplugs and grin and bear it ?
