After changing the oil on my 2001 nighthawk, I discovered that the threads on the oil pan were stripped. My solution was to rebore the hole and tap it to take an M14 drain plug. After tightening the plug back to the recommended torque (25 ft-lbs) with a crush washer, I noticed that the peaks of the threads on the bolt were almost aligned with the peaks on the pan threads (rather than seated in between). Before torquing the drain plug bolt, it was screwing in nicely. I don't have much machining experience, but this seems like it will lead to future problems? I am waiting on a new gasket so I haven't reinstalled the pan and started it up, but it seems to be sealed for now. Anyone had similar issues with the drain plugs stripping easily? Do I have too hard of a washer? Should I use less than the recommended torque? Or is this fine?
