I have a 1981 750 custom and am unable to get carbs back on intake boots. Gave up with replacement cheap boots because they are all the same size . I have used grease, wd40 and trying to tap on with rubber mallet but unable to get carbs back on boots

sometimes a hair dryer or heat gun will help
Block the wheels and push, shove, whatever it takes. Get a helper, shove, pull from both sides. The carbs will snap into a groove when using the stock boots.

Just rebuilt mine over the winter in my shed (new Hampshire pretty cold but my idea when I was at the end of my rope was to I took a ratchet strap wrapped around the frame in front of exhaust pipes around the entire engine and the choke intakes. As you ratchet tighter one click at a time I rocked the carb bank
Up and down .I know it is not conventional but it worked for me. After they were seated I installed the boot clamps . I started the engine and sprayed starting fluid and no leaks, good luck
