78 750k. 75k miles.

Previous owner told me that the engine has never really been torn apart.

Pulled the engine in order to replace the cam chain and cam chain guide. Noticed that the splines on the countershaft seem to be worn to a good degree from the sprocket. Previous owner said the sprocket and chain are relatively new and it seems that the countershaft splines are worn entirely across their length equally; it almost looks factory, but I can't imagine they would make the splines that loose from counter shaft to sprocket.

This wear results in the sprocket being able to be rotated a few degrees while the bolt is on tightened down.

What are my options here? I was hoping not to open the case right now and ride for the rest of the summer with just the timing chain done.

Please see photos.

You have the engine out, need to split the cases to replace the timing chain anyway, that shaft is an easy swap with the case split.

No, I have a master link chain for the cam. I was planning on using the old chain to pull it through. Then pull the entire engine a part again in the winter to do everything on the bottom end that is necessary. Obviously, then I would do the counter shaft. I'm thinking of adding little spline shims for the time being so there is less slop between the sprocket and the counter shaft.
