What started as an intermittent timing light strobe on the #1 cylinder has led me to believe my stock/OEM pulse generators are bad, even if they resistance test ok.

Coils have already been replaced, and bike is running much better, but still has cold pipe #4. Carbs have been gone through by myself and a pro.

A few questions about the Dynatek ignition that seems popular:

- Is there a place people like to purchase from?

- Do I need the entire “system” or is the trigger plate enough? (Seems like a coil is coil is a coil)

- They offer a few models, is the 2000 series the best bet? Seems to be popular here.

Thanks,

FG

I don’t know if you are where you wanted to be, but no - my post did not generate any interest. Since then I did purchase the Dynatek rig straight from Dynatek. They helped me get what I needed and no more or less. Have not installed it yet. Spring project, but I’m optimistic it will solve the issue.

Dang. I have this exact issue. One pulse coil seems bad. 1 and 4 cold. Intermittent spark. Was really hoping for a good answer here.
Anyway. Keep us informed on the Dynatek setup!

Will do. Planning on getting to it this week or next The old pulse generators checked ok with multi-meter (which people selling them used will tell you about theirs) but in practice they are failing intermittently. I did another test by hooking timing light up to each plug wire in turn, just to see if they would activate light - it was intermittent at best on #1 and #4. When we swapped coils, it didn’t make a difference, so it’s not them.

Mine only fired once right at first press of the start button, then nothing. Swapped coils, same thing. Fresh battery, same thing. Followed the manual and tried bridging generator with screwdriver. One fired over and over. The other did nothing.
I have a spare motor of dubious condition. Going to pull the generator assembly off of that one and try it first.

This has been a real puzzler for a long time. Some were convinced it was a carb idle circuit thing. Chased that rabbit long and hard.

I don’t think I invented the timing light test, but I did for myself. Had never heard of it but it made sense to see if each plug wire was consistently getting full juice. They were not, but as I said before, the standard spark test didn’t look abnormal.
