I pulled the tank due to rust in the tank and the carbs. After filling the tank with vinegar and letting it soak for a few days I dumped the vinegar and rinsed it with water a number of times. I pulled the fuel petcock to better drain the tank. The petcock looks fairly new, there is a strainer attached to it as expected. When I inspected the inside of the tank I noticed another strainer. I don't believe it's supposed to be there as the parts breakdowns don't show a strainer in the tank diagrams.

Has anyone seen this before?

Did you use baking soda with your final rinse ? You need to nuetralise the vinegar otherwise the rust will come back

Yes. The old strainer tends to pull loose from the petcock eventually and remains in the petcock bung. Remove the old strainer that's stuck in the tank, you only need one.

I did some more investigation yesterday and determined that very thing. It turns out that the old strainer is a larger diameter so the newer one fit inside the original strainer.

All good now
