Engine numbers

1970 model CB750 (not sand cast), the engine number has been hand engraved / etched into the housing. Explanation by owner / seller is they used to break chains and damage the housing. When Honda provided a replacement housing they required an engine number and they or the dealer engraved the number onto the number plate. Does this sound valid?

yes sounds legit. Decent shops would have used number/letter punches instead of engraving but people did do it that way.
