I have a new to me 1982 CB750sc Nighthawk. I would also like to preface that I am a novice when it comes to mechanical troubleshooting or mechanic work. . The bike has just over 9000 miles on it and it starts no issues. I am currently working on getting the bike roadworthy so I am working on some projects to ensure it will run great.

After charging my battery on the bike, I let it warm up for about 10 minutes while slowy getting it off of choke. It idles around 900 to 1000 RPM. When I attempted to ride the bike to see how it ran, I pulled in the clutch, it felt soft and easy to pull in. I pressed the shifter into gear, heard the click, then the bike violently lurched forward like it was being dumped into gear and then immediatly stalled. I put the bike back into neutral, started it back up and repeated it again with the front break pulled. It did the same thing.

I put the bike on to the center stand, started the bike in neutral and pulled in the clutch lever and put it into gear. Immedgieatly I noticed the rear wheel was moving even with the clutch pulled all the way in. I attempted to pull the clutch in and go through all the gears several times to try to see if the clutch plates were stuck. No Dice. the issue kept happenen.

I checked the clutch cable on the clutch lever and tried to adjust it as i saw the cable was moving alot with alot of slop. I had to loosen the cable adjuster a lot for the cable free play to be somewhat in tolerance. When I pull the cable in, it is very hard. When I attempt to do the test again, it feels like the clutch isn't disengaging all the way even with the cable some what adjusted and the bike isn't idling correctly with the cable adjused that way.

I am not sure what the problem is. My guesses are either stuck clutch plates, cable adjustment issues, or something else related in the clutch itself. I have the manuals for the bike and when it get cooler out I will try to adjust the free play of the cables on both the clutch side and the clutch lever side.

Any other ideas that could be the culprit? any input would greatly be appreciated.
