Hi, I have a K4, how can I make sure my spring tensioner does the job. I adjust the bolts during the cam chain adjustment procedure. But no difference . I also inserted a small Alen key in the hole in order to check any return tension, but nothing. Will I have to remove and clean the whole cam chain ?

I removed my tensioner and found it was very reluctant to move on the spring. I gave the shaft a very light rub with 800 grit, then polished it with metal polish and it was much happier. Of course, the gasket was toast, so I made one up from a sheet of gasket paper.

Assuming it's a 750? There's a specific point to adjust the tensioner. I only mention this in case you weren't aware. The Honda workshop manual covers it in 2 places, but only one of them mentions the tensioner should be released at 15 degrees past (I think it's past, rather than before) TDC for 1 & 4, with cyl 1 on its compression stroke (if I recall correctly, but plse check). This is the point the chain is at its loosest. 👍

Hi UK K6, thanks for yr reply, regarding the 15 degrees past , only one tuto, out of 4, Was advising it. Indeed I have a 750. May be I should try the adjustment again with a 15 degree past. As the one I just did , did not change a lot.

It's possible the slider is snagged and needs TLC.

What are you concerned about / why do you think your cam chain is slack? If you're trying to get a quiet and smooth idle at about 1,000 rpm, you'll likely never get there. I'm not convinced they ever did. Even with identical compression on all 4, carbs 100% in synch, timing spindle 100% true, points and timing spot on, strong auto advance spring, valves at spec, primary and cam chains at correct tension... I went down that rabbit hole and settled for a smooth idle at 1300 revs instead :) 👍

Oh, the clutch can rattle a bit too!

Merci Monsieur,
I always chose my bikes for the sweet melody of their Engine. 1942 WLA, 1985 XT 500 Yamaha and my Honda. And like you said having
