What’s up guys, first time I’ve ever posted on a forum. I recently purchased a 1979 cb750 for pretty cheap, it’s a nice bike that I wanted to take the time to upgrade and make my own. I rode it around town a bunch, no rides longer than 20 min, and it never gave me any real problems (it’s got a broken Speedo/tacometer), it shifted well and the motor felt responsive.

Then I took it up to the mountain (I live in Vegas), and after about an hour of riding and while I was in the twists I notice the oil light was on and I looked down to see oil covering the rear end of my bike. I was able to get to a safe-ish spot and after I shifted down to first it finally died on me. I had extra oil so I threw it in, got the bike to start and got to an actually safe place to leave the bike before it died again. Later I went back up and got it with the truck.

When I got it home it seems like the gasket between the top and lower ends blew, as that’s where it looked like the oil was coming from. After a few weeks I did an oil change and inspected the old oil for any metal shavings (didn’t find anything) and decided to see if the bike would just start. It started up but after a few minutes the oil like came on so I shut it off immediately.

I’m decent with a wrench (first bike was a 2000 shadow that I chopped), but I’ve never had real motor experience. I wanna take the bike to a shop but I’m thinking it’ll need at least a top end rebuild and maybe a lower too depending on what the original cause of the oil light was and I’m guessing that’ll get very expensive.

Sorry for the long winded story but does anyone have any experience with something similar that could offer some insight? You think it’ll require a full rebuild? Any common oil system issues anyone has come across? Anything would be great, thanks guys.
