Currently rebuilding/restoring an 82 Custom. Trying to keep everything either stock or OEM+. Due to the smaller batteries available now (and the original bracket rusting through) I was planning on mocking up and 3D printing a box using the original bracket holes to hold the battery and all of the other electronical bits that are stored there. Was wondering what everyone else had done. Also if anyone has some pictures of the original placement of everything I would love to see that. My thinking is to print out a smaller box and leave the rest of the "compartment" hidden by the plastics as a small storage area. Thanks in advance.

Something like This but deeper and with a trapezoidal slot underneath

Edit: I whipped up a drawing resembling what I am thinking somewhat. Please excuse the lack of scale, lack of accuracy, or artistic ability but it should
give everyone somewhat of an Idea of what I am talking about.

Why not just use an original box if you are restoring the bike?
The original one is rusted through and is just a bracket for a bigger lead acid battery. I don't know how it was originally packaged either. It will all be covered by the Airbox/plastics/rear fender anyways and I would like to utilize the space as well as just package it nicely as it looks like a pigeon nest right now. I am trying to use as many factory parts as possible but when something would provide an advantage without taking away from the bike I have no issues going a different route.

Is that box compatible with the stock air box? Also, smaller batteries are typically lithium ion and some electronic changes/upgrades need to be investigated.
I would design it so it would be. But I believe that the airbox doesn't protrude past the V (The original bracket would be bigger than my new box). I would just try to use the space more effectively.
