Is there detailed exploded view of these carbs anywhere? I didn't take enough pictures and the diagram in the factory manual sucks. I looked at parts places on line but they're all scans of microfiches that are even worse.

I got this far but the linkage has me stumped. There's a slew of little shims and washers and I'm not really grasping how the adjusters and levers go together.

I have all of them loosely bolted to the front rail to help me visualize.

A lot of people like those. Some say it wakes up the engine better. I believe they are a flat slide carb (if I have that right) so the throttle response is crisper.

Practically speaking, though, for $700 I could just send what have to someone who knows what they're doing.

Flat slides are great. They work good and they're dead simple. I had one on my SR500 and it was so similar to the Amals I'm familiar with that I didn't need a book.

Very true. And although it is painful now, the knowledge you gain to do it much better (hopefully perfect) every time in the future is priceless.
I'm putting this motor in a chopper so all it has to do is run nice and accelerate smoothly. I thought about disabling the air cutoffs and accelerator pump to simplify this but that would just make more problems to solve.

I think you'll want the accel pump, especially for smoother acceleration. I've heard of air cut offs being removed without any performance issues or being injurious to the engine. Although, if they are wrong, I don't know it. The air cut off valve is activated via vacuum during decel and enriches the mixture to prevent popping. If it does anything else, I don't know of it.

Yeah, I was just thinking out loud. That would add variables instead of eliminating them. However none of my other bikes have any of that stuff and they work fine. They're not as good, in that you can't snap the throttle open without dropping power but you get used to not doing that.

I also took the idiot's way out (a well worn path for me) on assembling the carbs. I found a cheap set on FB to look at as I'm working. They're also way better than what I started with on the current set so if a second attempt is required...
