I'm just starting a project to get a '73 running after it sat for way too long. The chrome parts have some light rust and I'd like to figure out the costs to renew them one way or the other. I've seen a few comments on forums and facebook groups stating that re-chroming existing parts is way more expensive than buying new parts. I've never had an opportunity to check into the cost of chroming parts so I'd appreciate any input that would be helpful.

Currently rebuilding a basket case F1 which I didn't dismantle so a lot of head scratching and searching parts lists for clues, anyway I have replaced some of the smaller chrome items as they would be fiddly and time consuming to refurbish properly so guess they would be cheaper to buy new than pay for the labour time involved, larger parts tend to be more expensive to renew but less fiddly to refurbish so I have them put aside for rechroming but I haven't had any chrome done for a few years so I'm a bit out of touch with prices, I have a front mudguard to chrome which I know won't be cheap but then with copies at £300 or thereabouts I hope the chroming will come in less but if it's a bit more at least it will be an original part!

Due to a biblical amount of rain in my neck of the woods , my bike has been sitting in a hot humid garage for the last 5 mths since my resto , nuts and bolts are starting to show signs of rust . Although I fully stripped and rebuilt it , I reused as much as I could . So I wire wheeled a lot of the bolts and used WD-40 and crushed up alfoil on the chrome . I also soaked everything I could in evaporust to remove what I could . I am now going to try to replate most of the nickel/zinc with electroplating . There are a ton of tutorials on the youtubes and even brickhouse builds does one . I have seen one that doesn`t even require electicity , only the zinc solution and heat . So bit by bit I will try to get rid of this surface rust on my F2 and it will just be getting weekly WD-40 baths till I can rid most of it

Thanks hinksy, I did some quick research on how to treat the bolts and fasteners and I figure I'll have to tackle those as well. I appreciate your input
