Hey all, hoping someone here can help. I’m at my last effort before giving up.
Background:
I bought my ‘93 Nighthawk recently as a non-running project. After some initial work I found loose ground cables and a kill switch stuck in OFF — reworked the wiring and got her running. She’s been running perfectly fine for about a week and I’ve taken her out 5–6 times with no issues.
The problem:
Today I went out for a ride and stalled at a stoplight (car behind me was pushing me into the intersection, no big deal). When I went to restart, nothing. Pulled over, cycled the kill switch on/off, tried again — no clicking, no turning, no sound whatsoever. Pushed it back to the garage.
What I’ve already checked:
• Battery voltage — good
• All lights work normally, no dimming
• Continuity on the solenoid — good
• All fuses — good
• Kill switch grounds — good
• Multimeter shows 12V at the solenoid (signal side), so power is getting that far
• Everything tests the same as it did last week when the bike ran fine
The symptom:
When I press the start button, I get absolutely nothing. No click from the solenoid. No bump from the starter. Total silence. It’s as if I’m not even pressing the button. The engine doesn’t even try to turn over.
My confusion:
If the kill switch or start button failed mechanically, wouldn’t I get something — at least intermittent contact if I press harder? But there’s nothing at all. Everything electrical on the bike works fine (lights, neutral indicator, etc.), I just can’t get any signal to the starter.
Does this point to a specific failure? Could this be the starter cut-off relay, or do I need to replace the whole right switch assembly? Local shops won’t touch these bikes, so I’m relying on the community here.
Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance.
