I've just bought myself up a 1992 CB750 RC42 and it's currently a bit of an unknown. I pick it up on the weekend, I got it cheap so thought I'd take a punt and a bit of a risk. I have a couple of issues that I have already done a search on google and this forum and can't find any results. So I'm hoping you can help?! I'll list my questions below:

The bike comes without a starter motor - the bloke I bought it off bought it 10 years ago and it came without a starter, and from my research they seem pretty rare. Part number 31200-MW3-672 or 31200-MW3-671. Now there's a company online that make a brand new aftermarket version but it's Ā£243 šŸ¤Æ does anyone know where I can source one of these cheaper, or have one kicking about that they would sell at a reasonable price?

Segway into my next question, and again I've searched high and low on this forum and online but can't find any parts shops selling everything I might need, Including bearings, gaskets, and this blasted starter motor which is discontinued etc etc. - Where is the best place in the UK to buy parts for these bikes? Is there a 1 stop shop or is it a bit of a treasure hunt at various different places? Can anyone point me in the direction some good websites as a starting point please?

Finally, after doing a bit of digging into the history of this bike via a HPI check I've found out it's done 62k miles šŸ˜³. Now I know this is high for any bike, but what are these engines like on high mileage? Would you be expecting to carry out a full bottom / top end rebuild / refurb of this engine? This is particularly why I've asked about the parts. I'm no expert mechanic but quite looking forward to the learning process of tearing down and rebuilding the engine (adding to my tools collection šŸ¤«) but only if necessary. Would you do this anyway as standard at this kind of mileage? Or would you get it running and check compression and how it's running before making the investment of time and šŸ’° (obvs first thing is to get it running).

My dream is to turn it into something beautiful again, with a cafe racer / brat twist and I'm looking forward to the challenge. Any advice or help in addition to the above questions is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the welcome to the forum!

have you tried evil bay for motor, apart from that i wish you good luck with getting things in pieces , mine was stood for 10 years and was a long job because most bolts snapped and the corrosion in the brake calipers and master cylinders was grim to see.i gave up on the exhaust nuts because i knew they would snap.carbs were another big problem

Yeah I've found nothing on Ebay apart from this one company selling an aftermarket starter for Ā£243!! I have found a Gasket Kit A (NAS) which I'm sure I will need for Ā£90 rather than Ā£300 CMSNL are selling them for...... I watched a load of youtube videos saying parts were plentiful on these.... Seems not the case. If you can shout any good websites to buy parts from I'd appreciate that. How are you getting on with your project? Anywhere close to finishing yet? How long you been working on it? What have been the biggest challenges?

i spent 4 months on it hung from the garage roof on lorry ratchet straps i got it in working order ie all the wheel bearings , seals , brakes ,tyre's' electrics ,swinging arm bearings, cables and a week getting the rust out of the bottom of the tank. all new carb boots from japan and full expensive carb kits. don't skimp on gaskets you could be sorry .. i put a grand into mine and thought sod doing the paint back to original it's all black and staying black . it's done 35000 km [ it is a jap market bike not European or other ] engine is sweet so i'm happy. i wrapped the exhausts to hide the rust two of them were bad because it had been stood on the side stand outside..... biggest challenge the oxidation of ally parts and trying to get bolts out of ally

Looking lovely mate, you know I like that you've kept the original paintwork. It retains all it's character! Any tips for getting the bolts out of the ally? Penetrating oil and patience I imagine? I guess impact wrenches and the likes will just shear the bolts?

it's called a galvanic reaction of two different metals i think and they weld together and no amount of heat or oil does anything , i snapped a couple of 8mm ones and that is why i left the exhausts alone , that isn't original paint work that is my tidy up with rattle cans, original has stripey bits like the 750 f2's.

I was going to buy it but i got mine to work ..as for the bolts alloy and steel mmm your dam right I had to cut my engine out of the frame as the two long bars would not come out I hammer shite out used a whole can of gas just warming up the two alloy parts on the engine to expand them then even putting ice cold water and wet rags to try and brake the two apart . Nothing work but brute force .

Looks like Iā€™ve got a lot of swearing and frustration to look forward to!

Ah thanks mate, it worked now, funny you say Iā€™ve already made an offer on it because I donā€™t need the sprocket cover, he hasnā€™t responded unfortunately
Any news on your parts m8
So I offered the guy to buy just the starter motor, and he ignored me for a bit (I made an eBay offer too) then he messaged back to say he was on holiday and trying to stay off his phone until Saturdayā€¦.. which would have been just as easy to just negotiate a deal with that time, makes no sense but hey ho. Will hear back on Saturday but have a brand new very expensive (Ā£240) starter motor arriving today that I will just crack on with if this deal doesnā€™t pan out. Itā€™s a shame but I just want to get moving on the project and this is the first step to see if the bike runs!

Hi m8 hope it works out . I wanted the cover but he was asking too much as I can buy a new one off a germany company . An I asked about the starter . And he lumped the two together. Which is a deal as you know the starter is a pain in the ass .. but I got mine working (it was filled with grease for some reason) so i got it working . .so good luck hope works out .he's got quite a few bits there might need more off him might make him more likey to do a deal .
