I've just bought myself up a 1992 CB750 RC42 and it's currently a bit of an unknown. I pick it up on the weekend, I got it cheap so thought I'd take a punt and a bit of a risk. I have a couple of issues that I have already done a search on google and this forum and can't find any results. So I'm hoping you can help?! I'll list my questions below:
The bike comes without a starter motor - the bloke I bought it off bought it 10 years ago and it came without a starter, and from my research they seem pretty rare. Part number 31200-MW3-672 or 31200-MW3-671. Now there's a company online that make a brand new aftermarket version but it's Ā£243 does anyone know where I can source one of these cheaper, or have one kicking about that they would sell at a reasonable price?
Segway into my next question, and again I've searched high and low on this forum and online but can't find any parts shops selling everything I might need, Including bearings, gaskets, and this blasted starter motor which is discontinued etc etc. - Where is the best place in the UK to buy parts for these bikes? Is there a 1 stop shop or is it a bit of a treasure hunt at various different places? Can anyone point me in the direction some good websites as a starting point please?
Finally, after doing a bit of digging into the history of this bike via a HPI check I've found out it's done 62k miles . Now I know this is high for any bike, but what are these engines like on high mileage? Would you be expecting to carry out a full bottom / top end rebuild / refurb of this engine? This is particularly why I've asked about the parts. I'm no expert mechanic but quite looking forward to the learning process of tearing down and rebuilding the engine (adding to my tools collection ) but only if necessary. Would you do this anyway as standard at this kind of mileage? Or would you get it running and check compression and how it's running before making the investment of time and (obvs first thing is to get it running).
My dream is to turn it into something beautiful again, with a cafe racer / brat twist and I'm looking forward to the challenge. Any advice or help in addition to the above questions is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the welcome to the forum!
