1980 750f chain specs

Depends on how many teeth you have on your front and back sprockets. The size of the sprockets is quoted as wrong for the CB Customs on the Honda fiches. So, I wouldn't take Honda's word on your bike either.
for the stock 18t and 38t what would the links be?

Do you have the chain that was on it? I'm guessing that your original rear sprocket has been changed from 40. 38 or 39 is a better choice from 40t on these bikes. Sometimes buying a longer chain is the better price. You will probably have to cut off a few links to get a good fit, in the right adjusting range of the swing arm. For instance, my CB750C is using 18t front and 39t rear with a 104 link chain. So I buy the best priced chain 104 links or more and cut off the extra links. I don't use a chain breaker, I use a cut off wheel to grind the head of the pin and support the link with a socket and punch out the pin with a punch. Chain breakers are for people that don't have tools. I don't use rivet connectors either.

mr twowheel just out of interest with 18- 39 what revs are you doing at 60mph i am considering changing my 18- 42 because i keep going for a 6th gear , cheers

With 18/39 I get 55 MPH at 4200 RPM, 60 MPH at 4600 RPM, 70 MPH at 5300 RPM. All 3 of my '81 CB750C's are 18/39. Lately I've been considering 4th gear as almost unnecessary when accelerating hard.;)

well i'm getting 60mph at 4000revs 70mph at 5000 with 18 42 i wonder if my 1979 fz jap domestic bike has a different gearbox??
That's why I specify my numbers are for a '81 CB750C. Chain length......could be different frames, could be different swingarms between the models. One tooth smaller on the rear and two links shorter than stock on the chain seems to be the go-to on most models.

And then to add to the confusion between the models Honda states 43 teeth for the '81 CB750C on their parts fiches. Dennis Kirk and every other retailer has repeated the 43 tooth as original/stock. No, no, no, all three of my 750C's came with 40 teeth. The last bike I am damn sure was never changed. Hell, I could pull stumps with 43.
