Sounds good. You never said what happened to the head.
I buggered it up trying to drill out one of the 13 broken cam tower bolts. I’m still puzzled as t why they broke. I didn’t see any sign of loc-tite or somebody being in the engine. I did notice the bolts are not hardened. Between the broken bolts and the smoked valve, I think I’ll be further ahead with a new head or engine. In addition, the chain guide was broken at the top retainer and I think that allowed the chain to wear a hole in the block. The hole is small but will need to be fixed. Is it common for the chain guide to break. If I replace the engine, should I install a new one? Looks easy to do since I’ll have the valve cover off for valve adjustment. Would appreciate advice on a gasket kit if you have a link to a recommendation. Thanks, Jim
Depending where the hole is it can be welded up. Any types of sealers won't last so I would recommend not trying any sealers to fill the hole. If you are going with a complete engine it would be wise to check the chain guide and replace if needed. Cheap to do now instead of later. Valve adjustment for sure. If you are buying an engine don't buy one unless the seller has some history on the bike it came from because you might end up no further ahead than you are now. It sounds like your engine may have a lot of miles on it. The trick to getting those bolts off that you broke is simple. Use a brass drift and give the head of the bolt a good smack with a hammer as if you were trying to drive the bolt into the hole. The brass drift won't damage the top of the bolt. What that does is "Shock" the threads. Then the bolts will come out no problem. Too late for you now but you will know in the future. Do the same thing on any bolt on the engine and you will never break one. Vintage CB750 sells Athena gaskets that seem to be decent quality. Some gaskets are still available from Honda but aren't cheap.
