    5th gear slip

Yes, adjustment was made with slack in the cable

    5th gear slip

It's been adjusted to what manual suggests-> 3/4 of a turn out after the bolt lightly seats

    5th gear slip

A couple months ago I posted an issue that I have on my 81 CB750F. At that time, I called it an engine power surge where cruising at about 5,000 rpm, occasionally there would be what I thought at the time a sudden "power surge" while the throttle is being held steady, almost like I've twisted...

MOTOR OIL: Are you using the right kind??? It's very important!

Thanks. Yes, shim and bucket. I asked cause I thought the flat tappet design had more to do with the shape of the camshaft lobe. But definitely shim and bucket. Coincidentally, I also use Castrol, in my case 10/40. I've owned the bike since 86 and have used that brand it's whole life.

MOTOR OIL: Are you using the right kind??? It's very important!

You specifically mention 72 Honda 750 but I assume the 79-82 DOHC 750s also have flat tappet design?

Cylinder 1 and 2 not firing - suggestions

I would check timing. Do a static timing check. Also, further to what dirtdigger said, are the wires going to the right plugs? the wires from the left-hand coil go to cylinders 1 and 4. the wires from the right-hand coil go to cylinders 2 and 3. So the order from left to right when looking from...

Here for more Carb tuning advice

I don't have much experience with the SOHC 750 carbs so just a shot in the dark here. Are those the stock jets? Seem rather large. My 81 has jets of 68 and 100.

    Manuals

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1sD40NnB1wWTzDq19P1B85o1qvhA0kBKH here's a link that you should be able to download from. One is the actual Honda shop manual. It say CB750K but it covers all the models: C, K, F The other is Haynes manual which i don't particularly like. There is also a...

    Clutch issue

There are three adjustments for the clutch. One at the lever to fine tune the amount of play and another at the other end of the cable outside the clutch housing also to adjust the amount of play. The third is in the clutch housing itself. I could be any one of these three. I have an 81 so I...

    Extra clutch disks/plates

I have an 81 CB750F and have owned it since 1986. About 35 years ago, give or take, I had my local Honda shop install a Barnett clutch as I had worn out my stock one and besides the stock one was never very good. I noticed an immediate difference. The Barnett one grabbed much better. Anyways...

    Airbox replacement with inline filters.#%&X

hmm. how does it run with throttle half open? If still not good then all i can suggest is timing, valves, both of which I'm sure you've done, or maybe cam chains and/or tensioners.

    Airbox replacement with inline filters.#%&X

I have a stock 81 CB750F. Currently the pilots are 2 turns out (full turns, not half turns). Rather than use the tedious and time consuming idle drop method mentioned in the shop manual, I started at 3 turns after rebuilding and cleaning the carbs as that's what the Macgregor Manual says...

    Somewhat of a nube

yes, good point, agree, cam chain guides and tensioners likely need replacing. I just replaced mine actually. When they are old, cracks appear.

    Somewhat of a nube

Wow, you've had yours longer than me. I bought mine in 86 and still have it. Does the engine need much rebuilding? 40,000 miles isn't much but I guess there is a lot of corrosion? I would think the bottom end should be fine as well as cam chains and sprockets. For the rest, pistons, rings...

    First time posting

Wow, they look beautiful. Your paint and decals look in better condition than my 81. The re-painted and re-decaled 79 tank looks perfect!! Tough call. I'm partial to the 750F as I've had mine for 39 years :) and much prefer the black/orange over the gray/blue. That being said, I've always wanted...

Hanging idle 82 750 airpod filters

I've never used pod filters but have heard that they can result in a lot of grief in getting the bike to run properly. I would try getting a stock airbox. Regardless, pods shouldn't affect idle too much. I agree with getting and using a sync tool and would suggest getting the Carbtune Pro Sync...

    Number 1 cylinder not firing

Ya, totally agree, only for high compression engines. And also better to have some in the bike when storing over winter. King & McCallum, so right off Hwy #1? Do you have a shop there where you are doing all these rebuilds? I'm close to 232nd and Hwy #1.

    Number 1 cylinder not firing

Hi neighbour :) I'm next door in Langley actually. Anyways, quick question. What kind of gas (octane rating) are you using? If your compression is lower and you are using high octane gas, it might not fire all the time

Dump your advice here! 81 cb750f

You definitely have an 81. The side covers, rear seat wing, etc match mine exactly. I echo previous comments. I've had success with CMSNL also when cant find parts in North America but they arent cheap. Try getting a Clymer 79-81. Should be able to find one online. I've attached a pic of my old...

    Aftermarket Exhaust Mounting Question

I was just browsing through some older threads, saw yours, and wondering if you solved this. Your header looks the same as mine which is a MAC. I recall when I got it, they gave me the same exact same collars as you have in your pics. They were useless. I finally took it to a local shop and they...

    Clutch housing rattle

brettp: wondering if you solved this or whether its a problem at all. I've owned an 81 cb750f for a long time and it has had a rattling noise for a long time. not sure if it has always had it. same as you describe though. its more pronounced on start up when cold, lessens when it warms up...

    Engine power surge

boots seem fine. sprayed water on them at idle and above idle with no change to engine speed. will have to look elsewhere I guess. maybe carbs out of sync.
  23. bbaart

    Engine power surge

I'll check the boots. Don't think clutch is slipping. I can still launch the bike fairly hard from standstill without slippage.

    Engine power surge

Forgot to mention, valve clearances have just been checked as well and are all within spec. But a lean condition, ya, could be. Any suggestions on where to look? I replaced the the intake rubber boots last year.

    Engine power surge

I have an 81CB750F and have owned it since 1986. I have never encountered the following until recently. When cruising at about 5,000 rpm, occasionally there will be a sudden power surge while the throttle is being held steady, almost like I've twisted the throttle. Except that I haven't. And it...

    Help!! I screwed up

I was just looking through some old posts on pilot screws and came upon your stream. My bike started making the occasional odd surge when riding with the throttle slightly open and then giving it a small twist. Like when your riding at about 40 mph in top gear and you twist the throttle slightly...

    Synthetic oil

Thanks. Do you think it needs to be formulated for wet clutch? or maybe thats just a marketing gimmick?

    Synthetic oil

Has anyone tried using synthetic oil in their bike? I was recently advised not to as these bikes weren't designed for synthetic oil use with a wet clutch and all. But just wondering if anyone has tried using it and what the results were.

    Post carb rebuild headache

I have a Carb Rebuilding manual from MacGregor Carb Cleaning Services. It suggests 3 turns. Also, I could be wrong but I believe the amount of turns only affects idle air mixture. So the amount of turns out does not affect when the throttle is opened wider. Did you sync the carbs?
