My 71 cb 750 has a hard time shifting from 2nd to 3rd ,I took off the side case and the shift shaft arm has a lot of play is this normal or could that be problem thanks jerry

Hard to say without seeing what you are talking about. Most shifting problems in the 750 are related to worn or broken shift shafts and worn dogs on the gears if it pops out of gear. There have been some issues with the part on the end of the shift drum getting loose and causing shifting issues. There is a staked philips head bolt that works loose. You can snug it up and restake it if it is loose. Otherwise you need to split the cases to check for any more issues.

The transmission shifts fine when I ride it ,other people have ridden it and say that the cannot get it out of 2 nd gear . It has never poped out of gear ,i checked the screw at the end of the shift drum and that is tight the part with the x has a lot of play side to side thanks jerry

The part will move around a lot without the side cover on, thats what keeps it in place. If it shifts fine for you then I wouldnt mess with it. My guess is the other people just arent shifting it firm enough, you need to make sure they are shifted firm and fully, if you try to be quick and or light shift they can miss shift. 40+ year old technology is not as nice of shifting as new stuff.

Very common problem. Works fine when you ride it. simple fix.

DO NOT LET OTHER PEOPLE RIDE IT!!!

Also how many miles on this bike. Shifter dogs and other worn parts are a result on high mileage or abuse - you can do wheelies on an R6 easy but your cb750 will require more effort.

Good number of miles may have some worn bent shifter dogs. Depends on past use / abuse.

Has the clutch been changed?? Age/ history of clutch could cause delay shifting. Plates may be sticking.

Difference between riders and clutch behavior.

Yes the clutch will stick if the bike sits for a week ,maybe I should do the clutch first ,does not seem to be to hard a job and then see if it shifts better thanks jerry
