hello everyone —

does anyone know what is the generator output in volts at idle of a CB750F Super Sport ?

I was considering purchasing a battery which requires at least 13.1 volts of output from the generator at idle speed

thanks for any info you could provide me with

These machines don't actually charge the battery at idle, from what I understand. The generator output for testing purposes is listed at something like 7,000 RPM.
If you have a voltmeter, you could always check this yourself. Won't hurt to tap the leads across the battery while the bike is idling and get a voltage reading.

Is this something special, like a lithium battery?

thank you S/A/M

I have SHORAI batteries on two of my other motorcycles ( '76 BMW R75/6 and '76 BMW R90/6 ), and I've had these batteries since 2018 -- never a problem, and they still work perfectly, even when I don't ride these bikes more n 200 miles per year at most. At idle, the generators voltage output is 12.3 and 12.4 volts.

When I contacted SHORAI Technical Service yesterday, they said "the 13.1 volt minimum idle output requirement is stated on all of their batteries", so that the customers know that the battery will otherwise eventually discharge after extended hours running an engine and its accessories at idle speed.

This seems to clarify the question I had -- and the Honda is getting a new SHORAI.

Thank you again !

Sounds like that requirement is a safety net for the company, so they don't get warranty claims from ignorant people who don't know that motorcycles don't charge their batteries at idle.
Ride your bike instead of letting it sit idling and you'll be perfectly fine.
