Hey everyone, I bought a 1980 CB750F as my first motorcycle a few months ago and it’s been awesome! An issue I have however is that my tachometer doesn’t work, it was broken when I bought it. It’s stuck at zero and when I rev the bike it vibrates a little but stays at zero. As a new rider and owner of this bike, I would just really appreciate it working so I can learn when to shift. What could I do to fix this? It probably sounds like a stupid easy fix to you guys, but I bought an old bike so I could learn more about wrenching on a motorcycle, thus I need to start small haha. Let me know if more details would be helpful, I could probably record a vid too.

I’m so happy to be part of this community, it’s seriously a dream come true to have a UJM especially as my first bike. I hope to keep it forever!
Thanks, A.G.

Congrats on the bike purchase.

First thing I would check is the tachometer cable. Sounds like the broken cable ends could still be touching and causing the tach needle to vibrate.

It runs from the back of the tach to the top of the valve cover. These cables can break over time and are easy to check, just remove the cable at both ends and see it's broken in two. They are cheap to replace, $15-$40 new from 4into1.com or vintagecb750.com.

Welcome to the site. We all start somewhere. @BB74 has you covered with the likely solution to your tachometer problem. It should be an easy fix.

I appreciate it! Tachometer cable is on the way, hope it works.

Let us know if that's the issue. If you remove the old one you'll be able to tell if it's broken internally.
